Education is at the forefront of all museum endeavors. As a vibrant member of the staff at the Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum, the Education & Visitor Services Specialist provides support in cutting-edge programs and initiatives. They deliver innovative curricula, programs, events and activities that educate the visiting public- both on-site and off, including STEAM Nights and field trips. They provide excellent visitor services, and support the visitor experience by working at the front desk for select hours during the week. The specialist will work 4-6 weekend days a month to assist in the facilitation of birthday parties, as well as support our Discovery Ambassador staff as “Manager on Duty”.
Part-time, Non-Exempt Position: Hours vary with demand; 16 -24 hours/week, with at least 16 of those hours allotted to visitor services. Typical schedule is Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with additional weekend and evening hours required. Actual hours vary with demand, and will be highest during peak field trip traffic, typically October-January and March-May. Work can occur at the museum and off-site.
Duties
- Leads Field Trip Orientations, communicating museum expectations and practices to teachers on site.
- Delivers Field Trip Education programs.
- Helps Maintain education program supplies.
- Works Saturdays to host weekend birthday parties, including collection of final payment, maintaining party supplies, and maintaining the party room.
- Represents the museum at offsite outreach events, including STEAM Nights at schools
- Supports Discovery Ambassador staff and serves as “Manager on Duty”
- Serves 8 hours at front desk per week, welcoming visitors, selling tickets and merchandise.
- Engages visitors on the exhibit floor, facilitating play through both structured and open ended activity
- Helps maintain a safe and clean museum environment.
- Contribute to a culture of open communication and spirited collaboration among museum educators and all members of museum staff, board, and volunteers.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree strongly desired
- Demonstrated competency in education, including teaching, curriculum development, and working with children.
- Committed to serving the educational needs of a diverse population.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft computer programs and other computer skills
- Strong interpersonal skills, public speaking and facilitations capabilities.
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff and volunteers.
- Fun loving spirit and affinity for swarms of children.
- Ability to work well independently
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Friendly patient attitude; good customer service
- Excellent organizational skills, detail-oriented, and able to multi-task
Pay: $15.00 per hour

Discovery Ambassador
$12.50/hr, 8-15 hrs/week
The Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum is looking to add several dynamic Discovery Ambassadors to our team. The part-time role of Discovery Ambassador opens and closes the museum according to museum facility and cleaning policies and welcomes and registers all museum visitors at the admissions desk. The Discovery Ambassador may serve on the museum floor, resetting exhibits, cleaning, and modeling play to museum visitors. The Discovery Ambassador may also represent the museum at off site venues for STEAM Nights and promotional marketing events. By treating the museum as more than just a destination for visitors, but rather as a valued crossroads for community engagement, the Discovery Ambassador makes each visitor’s experience exceptional for its service, hospitality, and play. Stellar interpersonal and coordination skills in support of the museum’s mission are paramount. Also essential are keen abilities to manage museum store sales and membership sales during shifts at the welcome desk.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required, some college preferred.
- Retail, cash handling, and customer service experience required
- Experience working with young children required.
- Hire offer dependent upon clear drug screen and background check
