Summer Camps

Join us at the Discovery Museum for a summer of adventure, education, and fun! There are camps for everyone, from preschool to high school! All programs are led by qualified professionals, with curriculum enhanced by our SVDM education team. The Discovery Museum is running a full summer of enriching fun from June 5-August 18. Extended hours are available for working families.

 Pre-School Camps

Once Upon a Time Camp: Join Mr. Mark for a week of imagination, creativity, active games, arts and crafts, science, and storytime fun as we enter the magical world of Once Upon a Time. In the enchanted world of fairytales, you never know what will happen next! Open to 4-5 year old campers who are toilet independent. AUG. 14-18, 9 AM-12 PM

Elementary Camps (K-5)

Camp Discovery: Have a blast with new friends in this day-long exploration of arts, crafts, and sciences. Each day offers revolving themes, projects, and special guests. Experienced educators bring your camper a fantastic world of imagination, enrichment, and hands-on play. Brown bag lunch required. Jedi Training for Young Padawans: Calling all novices in the force! Join Master Lorilei Dreibelbis, a Jedi Knight, for a week of exploring the world around and within you. Explore the science of being a Jedi, create your own planets, and even a robot. Discover the force within you through teamwork, confidence building exercises, and decision making. Rising K-5th graders JUNE 26-30 & JULY 31-AUG 4, 9 AM-12 PM
Maker Camp, Level I: Calling creative young minds to discover, tinker, create, and make! Your child will work with special guest makers to develop confidence, creativity, and interest in science, technology, engineering, math, and the arts through the world of making. Rising 1st-6th graders

Nature Camp: Campers will gain an appreciation for the outdoors using things they find in nature to create art, make discoveries through science experiments, and get active with music and movement activities. Led by LCPS teacher Valerie Swann, this camp provides enriching play-based lessons sure to delight the senses and develop a sense of wonder in nature. Rising K-4th graders July 3-7, 9 AM-4 PM (no camp July 4)
Play for Peace: Art, music, dance, and drama led by caring counselors help make Peace Camp unforgettable. Little Friends for Peace brings 35 years of experience to teaching peace and conflict resolution through games and play. This playful approach to conflict resolution will give your campers skills to succeed in everyday life. Rising K-5th graders JUNE 5-9, 9AM-4PM
Superhero Camp: It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a superhero kid! Unleash your inner superhero and create your own story. Bring your superhero to life through art, stories, games, drama, and superhero boot camp.  Rising 1st-5th graders  JUNE 19-23, 9 AM-12 PM
 Up on the Roof: Use nature’s colors and patterns as inspiration for your very own eco-art! Explore the work of other eco-artists and learn to use natural materials to create temporary works of art that can be photographed for enjoyment later. Learn techniques to make your very own take-away crafts using upcycled materials Science and art are friends in this exciting camp up on the roof! Rising K-5th graders JUNE 20-24, 9 AM-12 PM

UPPER CAMPS (Grades 3-9)

Advanced Jedi Training: Calling all experienced practitioners of the force! Join Master Lorilei Dreibelbis, a Jedi Knight, for an advanced level week that continues your training with an in-depth exploration of the characters, science, and stories of the Star Wars universe and how they can shape our real lives. Chess Camp: Kings, Queens, Bishops, Knights -sounds like a royal time! No need to be an expert, chess expert Jim Moyer caters to new and seasoned chess players alike! Stimulate your grey matter by developing strategies, making friends, and having fun! Every camper will be presented with a chess set at the end of camp. Rising 3rd-9th graders JUNE 12-16 and JULY 24-28, 9AM-12PM
 Discovery in Motion: Shenandoah Conservatory Arts Academy and the Discovery Museum education team join forces to offer you a full week of camp that blends art, science, dance, music, and drama. Campers explore singing, dancing, acting, art, and instruments – as well as the science behind the creative process. Brown bag lunch required. Rising 4th-7th graders  JUNE 12-16, 9 AM-4 PM
Happy Hands Puppet Camp: Veteran puppet master Mike Faison inspires creativity in young minds through hands-on activities. Campers will learn how to make puppets, how to develop creative stories and bring those stories to life, and come away excited about learning and developing healthy habits. Rising 3rd-7th graders June 12-16, 9AM-12PM
Hogwarts Adventure Camp: Leave the world of Muggles behind and learn the science behind the magic experienced by students at Hogwarts. After you have been sorted into houses, your stay at Hogwarts will include such studies as wand-making, potions, care of magical creatures, astronomy, and herbology. Learn how these subjects connect to our everyday Muggle World! Rising 3rd-9th graders JUNE 19-23 and JULY 31-AUG 4, 1-4PM
Advanced Hogwarts Adventure Camp: For successful graduates of our 2016 camp. Includes Quidditch training boot camp. Rising 4th-10th graders JUNE 26-30 and JULY 17-21, 1-4PM
Tween/Teen Build Your Own Adventure Camp: Looking for a fun way to spend your summer? FCMS Guidance Counselor Lucas Laurer invites YOU to join forces for a week at the museum filled with fun, creativity, team building, active learning, and a tween/teen designed and approved curriculum. Brown bag lunch required. Rising 5th-9th graders JULY 3-7, 9AM-4 PM (no camp July 4)

Magic to Do With Jonathan Ford: Aspiring magicians learn tricks in a fun and supportive environment, where skill sets are taught according to age and experience level. Campers learn and perform magic tricks, explore the history of magic, watch cool demonstrations, learn how to create their own props, and learn how to “work the room.” Camp culminates with a student-performed magic show! Rising 3rd-7th graders, JULY 10-14, 1-4PM
Musical Theatre: Creating Stories through Song. Do you like to sing? Can you act? Do you enjoy designing, building, and painting things? Campers will collaborate to create, compose, and stage their own original musical under the guidance of professional musicians Jason and Heidi Mullen.

Ride on the Magic School Bus! Join our very own Ms. Frizzle, SVDM educator Jennifer Coleman, for a wild ride. Have a blast with new friends in this fast-paced exploration of arts, crafts, and science. Each day offers a new adventure, with special themes, projects, and guests. Rising 3rd-6th graders JULY 10-14, 9AM-12PM
Robotics Camp:  Experienced instructor Patrick Hausammann takes your child on a magical journey through robotics. Explore Lego Mindstorms, Hummingbird, and Little Bits! Make new friends and enjoy this fun introduction to building, programming, and designing robots! This action packed week is filled with challenging activities for all levels of robotics experience.  Rising 3rd-7th graders:  JUNE 12-16, 1-4 PM Rising 5th-9th graders:  JULY 24-28, 1-4 PM
Taking it to the Streets: Mural Painting: Murals and street art as fine art forms are growing in popularity around the world.  Work with visual artist Abigail Gomez to learn about the history of street art and important contemporary street artists, while refining artistic skills and creating collaborative public art in a fun atmosphere. Campers will create an original painted mural that will be displayed as public art in Winchester! Rising 5th-High School JULY 10-14 and AUGUST 7-11, 1-4PM
Young Filmmakers Camp:  Skyline Indie Film Fest fosters the talents and skills of young filmmakers in this weeklong intensive mentored by professional filmmakers. Campers will form film crews to create an idea, write a script, scout locations, and shoot and edit their films, culminating in a Friday film screening! Program takes place at the museum, but please register through Skyline Indie Film Fest  Rising 5th-High School JUL 10-14, 9 AM-4 PM $350/week
WIND ENERGY CHALLENGE: Do you have what it takes to complete the wind energy challenge? Led by James Madison University’s Wind Energy Center, campers will experiment and discover more about how we use electricity and harness the wind to create clean, renewable energy.  Campers will design and make wind turbines from the generator to the blades. The week culminates with a competition where campers show off their wind turbine designs and compete to generate the most energy. Rising 5th-9th graders AUG. 7-11, 9AM-4PM
MY ACT: Beauty and the Beast JR! During each camp session, students will learn performance skills in a fun and practical way while rehearsing for a show. At the end of the session, campers will perform Beauty and the Beast Jr. for an audience. As a bonus, campers will get to see the Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre production of Beauty and the Beast$350/camp Rising 3rd-High School JULY 10-21, 5PM-9PM


Soar Into Aviation: Join aviation experts for a fast paced single day camp adventure, located at the Winchester Regional Airport. Campers will learn about different facets of aviation through hands-on learning stations. Must provide own transportation to and from the airport. Rising 8th-High School JULY 31, 9AM-4PM COST: $50/single day
